Traffic Pollution May Alter Brain Structure, Increase Dementia Risk
Living in close proximity to major roadways is associated with an increased risk of dementia and alterations to brain structure, according to a recent study. Overall, dementia risk went up 13-14% for those living less than 1,000 m (0.62 miles) from a high traffic road.
This research follows up on other studies that have indicated there may be neurological risks connected with living near major roadways. The reason for these potential risks has been unclear, but the latest findings suggest that the problem stems more from air pollution than noise pollution.
The study analyzed data from 460,901 participants, including the distance from residential addresses to major roadways. MRI imaging was used to determine brain changes, and incidents of dementia were tracked over an average period of 12.8 years.
Along with increased dementia risk, smaller brain structure volumes were also found in participants living close to high traffic roads. Traffic-related air pollutants – particularly nitrogen dioxide and PM2.5 – were determined by the researchers to be the “primary drivers” behind the brain structure changes and higher dementia risk.
Antibiotics for Serious Childhood Infections No Longer Effective
Certain drugs used to treat common infections in young children and babies around the world are becoming virtually ineffective, some new research has found. This is mainly due to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance and is contributing to thousands of unnecessary deaths.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as one of the top 10 current global health threats. It occurs when the pathogens responsible for causing specific diseases become resistant to one or more of the drugs commonly used to combat them.
The recent findings reveal that many antibiotics used to treat childhood infections like pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis are currently less than 50% effective. One antibiotic (ceftriaxone) was likely to be effective in only 1 in 3 cases of sepsis or meningitis.
Some of the most affected areas are in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, but experts are warning that this is quickly becoming a worldwide issue. New antibiotic treatments for children and newborns may help the situation temporarily but alternative approaches are needed for a long-term solution, since microbes will likely become resistant to any new drugs as well.

8 Natural Ways to Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that occurs seasonally, usually in the winter months. Each person needs a different treatment approach, but there are multiple natural therapies that may help. Light therapy is one of the most effective and mimics the sunlight your body is missing. Vitamin D can be a critical support, since it helps regulate your mood, and exercise can help multiple forms of depression. Getting outdoors helps many people as well, and you may also want to consider talk therapy or a sunrise alarm clock. (More)
Fruit, Veggies Positively Alter Gut Biodiversity
If you needed yet another reason to eat your fruits and vegetables, here it is: They positively affect your gut health. More specifically, some new research has shown for the first time that consuming fruit and veggies increases diversity in the gut microbiome, which in turn benefits resilience and overall health. Researchers believe these effects may happen because plants have their own microbiomes that could “transfer” to the human gut when eaten. (More)
Prediabetes Plus Tobacco Use Could Triple Stroke Risk
Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes. Those who have prediabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years (without intervention), but a new study has found that tobacco users with prediabetes may have a bigger problem – a 3x greater risk of having a stroke. This combo may also put young adults at greater risk of chronic kidney disease and other health issues. (More)
Traditional Chinese Medicine Could Help Heart Attack Patients
Acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a very serious kind of heart attack that occurs when a coronary artery becomes completely blocked. Patients can suffer a number of severe effects afterwards, including death, stroke, and heart failure. Promisingly, a recent study found that a traditional Chinese medicine known as Tongxinluo can significantly improve health after STEMI and lowers the risk of adverse events occurring within 30 days and a year. 11 Little-Known Seizure Symptoms to Watch Out For
According to a recent research survey, most Americans wouldn’t recognize the signs of a seizure – apart from the full body convulsions often portrayed in movies and TV. Some lesser-known symptoms to watch out for in yourself or someone else include staring into space, falling suddenly, jerking the arms or legs, and stiffening the body. Loss of bowel or bladder control can also occur as can rapid eye blinking or a rhythmic nodding of the head. (More)

Zinc is a trace mineral, meaning your body only needs it in small amounts, but it’s essential for over 300 enzymes and hormones to function properly. Not getting enough zinc can lead to problems like immune impairment, hormonal dysfunction, and slowed growth.
